Instant stress, followed by poor food choices.

Scientists from the University of Zurich published new research that shows moderate levels of stress may have a negative effect on self-control when it comes to eating. After we’re put under pressure, we’re more likely to cave into our immediate cravings for junk food, rather than maintaining the willpower necessary to meet longer-term dietary goals.

The research was conducted on 50 men. Women will be tested in a follow up study but the results are expected to be much the same.

These 50 guys were all trying to eat a healthy diet but admitted to a weakness for junk food.

The guys were all subjected to mild stress and then asked what they would like to eat after the testing was done.

… the stressed individuals were more likely to pick foods that they viewed as tastier, rather than healthier. The researchers also noticed that fewer parts of the pre-frontal cortex, which influences our ability to remain disciplined, lit up in the stressed participants.


Now remember, this reaction was brought on by mild stress. All the guys did was hold one hand in icy water for a short time and that was enough to bring on thoughts of comfort food. Your life probably has much higher stress levels and so you have a much stronger reason to turn to food you find comforting instead of food that is healthy.

A New and Icky Way to Lose Weight

The US FDA recently approved a balloon system to help people lose weight. It’s called the Orbera Intragastric Balloon System.

This balloon is actually planted in your stomach and filled up with saline. Apparently it makes you feel like you’ve eaten and are full. I should think so.

“The system deposits a balloon in the stomach, through the mouth, via a minimally invasive endoscopic procedure with the patient under mild sedation, a process that takes around 30 minutes, according to the manufacturer.

Once in place, the silicon balloon is filled with up to 500 cc of saline so that it expands and induces a feeling of satiety. The maximum placement period is 6 months, after which it is deflated and removed.

The system is indicated as an adjunct to weight reduction for obese adults with body mass index of 30 to 40 kg/m2 who have been unable to lose weight through diet and exercise. It is to be used in conjunction with a long-term supervised diet and behavior-modification program, which are to be continued after device removal.”

It seems to work, sort of. People who kept the balloon in place for 6 months lost about 10% of their body weight and kept it off for 3 months after the balloon was removed. What a relief that must have been, not losing weight but getting the balloon out of their guts.

In contrast people who just did a 12 month behavior modification program only lost 3% of their body weight.

Side effects of having a saline filled balloon in your guts for 6 months were said to be “manageable” and no deaths occurred.

That is certainly reassuring but I think I’d rather just drink a lot of beautiful clean water and feel a bit hungry from time to time. My guts will remain a balloon free zone.

We often hear about low carb diets and how successful they prove to be in losing weight, but what is a low carb diet exactly?

The term “low-carb” means low in carbohydrates of course. Carbohydrates are usually found in foods like pasta, potatoes, fruit, bread and rice. A low carb diet does not entail any specific diet nor does it include well-defined steps to losing weight.

Evidence That Drinking Green Tea Really Helps With Weight Loss

Samantha Rees from Manchester, UK is giving credit to green tea for her stunning weight loss. Rees lost 108 pounds in a little over one year and says she only started to lose weight quickly when she started drinking green tea, right around 2000 cups of it.

The Paleo diet is an alcohol-free eating plan that emphasizes high-quality animal proteins, healthy fats, non-starchy vegetables, and excludes gluten, sugar, dairy, legumes, and processed foods.

The 6-foot-4 Jeb did not say how much he weighs, but he no longer has a chubby face or double chin, and his once puffy stomach is now flat, Celebrity Health & Fitness reported.

Mediterranean Quinoa Salad

What you need

1 smashed clove garlic
2 cups of water
1 diced red onion
2 cubes of chicken bouillon
1 cup quinoa, uncooked
2 chicken breasts, cooked and cut into small pieces
(Leave out the chicken if you don’t want to eat one. It’s just as good.)
1/2 a cup of olives chopped
1 large diced green bell pepper
1/4 cup of parsley, freshly chopped
1/4 spoon of salt
1/4 a cup of olive oil
1/2 a cup of chopped or crumbled feta cheese

How to make it

Boil the water, bouillon cubes, and garlic in a large saucepan then stir in the quinoa and reduce the heat to medium low.

Cover and let it simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the quinoa is tender and the water has been absorbed.

Remove the garlic clove and discard, pour the quinoa into a large bowl.

Stir in the chicken, bell pepper, parsley, onions, olives, salt, chives, and feta cheese into the quinoa.

Drizzle the balsamic vinegar, olive oil and lemon juice and stir evenly until well mixed.

Serve it hot or cold and enjoy.
