According to this very learned lady, Rachele M. Pojednic PhD, exercise is a “torture regimen for people trying to lose weight.”

I have to agree with her. As I pointed out in this post on FitBits and Gym Memberships exercise really doesn’t work very well for losing weight.

Exercise is very good for toning and buffing a body that is carrying only a small amount of fat but it’s what you eat that really makes the differnce in weight loss.

While exercise does burn calories the fact is that most people just don’t get enough exercise to help much with weight loss.

Consider this quote from Calorie Burned.

The key factor affecting calories burned running a mile is your weight, with a lesser impacting factor of the speed, the greater your weight the more energy required for you to run a particular distance. A 150 pound person running a mile will burn between 100 – 120 calories, where as a 200 pound person running a mile will burn 135 – 155 calories.

A Big Mac with large fries feeds you a whopping 1040 calories. That’s right from McDonald’s themselves. You can see the calorie count for all their meals here. So if you do the math you can figure out about how far you have to run to burn off one Mcdonald’s lunch. It’s a lot easier, though maybe not as satisfying, to have a salad.

Ms. Pojednic went on to say this about exercise and weight loss:

Which is why people don’t do it (exercise). And if they do, they usually hate it. And then they stop. Because, for them, exercise has become just a necessary evil to drop a few pounds.

So how does Leptin work? I wanted to know so I asked John to explain it to me. The basics are pretty simple really.

If the Leptin in your body is at a high level it speeds up your metabolism and tells your body to burn fat. Low levels of Leptin do the opposite, they signal your body to start storing fat.

    What does this mean? It means that even though women have much more Lepton than men their body does not use it efficiently to burn fat.

    This is a condition called “Leptin Resistance” and it’s characterized by the spongy almost cottage-cheese looking fat you see on certain areas of your body.

  2. Women also have a second problem with Leptin.

    When woman diet their Leptin levels can drop twice as far and twice as fast compared to men.

  3. This causes your metabolism to slow to a crawl and weight loss stops. You’ve hit another frustrating weight loss plateau.

    Do you gain most or even all of the weight you’ve lost almost immediately after stopping a diet?

    That’s a sure sign that your Leptin level dropped while you were dieting, slowing your metabolism and causing fat to be stored on your body even though you’re eating very little.

Now, I just want to recap. As a women you have two unique problems not faced by men

Problem #1 Even though you have more Leptin than men your body does not respond well to Leptin’s signal to burn off fat. This is like having your body’s master fat burning switch in the off position.

Problem #2 When you diet your Leptin levels drop dramatically. This slows your metabolism which results in those frustrating weight loss plateaus and rapid weight gain when you stop dieting.

If you like curry then you know about turmeric. It’s the orangey-yellowy spice that comes from the plants roots.

For most of us getting married is a very big event. We want to look our best for all the people, and cameras, that have come to see us off on a life long journey.

Not Exercise, Gym Memberships or Even a FitBit Will Make You Lose Weight

A recent survey of millions of Americans showed that physical activity had increased between 2001 and 2009. This increased amount of activity was matched by a rise in obesity.

Exercise is great for your heart and your cardiovascular system. But it won’t make you lose weight.

Lots of Americans exercise to the point where they feel they should be losing weight. But they aren’t. We are still getting fatter and isn’t becuse of lack of exercise. You don’t need any new equipment, a personal trainer, a new fitness class, video or regimen.

You don’t need anything new — no matter how many gym memberships you buy or how often you wear your Fitbit — won’t make you lose weight.

Exercise is Very Good, But Not For Weight Loss … The idea that our obesity epidemic is caused by sedentary lifestyles has spread widely over the past few decades, spurring a multibillion-dollar industry that pitches gadgets and gimmicks promising to walk, run and kick-box you to a slim figure. But those pitches are based on a myth.

Physical activity has a multitude of health benefits — it reduces the risk of heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure and possibly even cancer — but weight loss is not one of them.

But if weight loss is your goal, your diet is what really needs to change.

An analysis by professor Simon Capewell at the University of Liverpool revealed that poor diet (for example, eating too much junk food without enough nuts, whole grains, fruit and vegetables) now contributes to more disease and death than smoking, alcohol and physical inactivity combined. And up to 40 percent of those with a normal body mass index harbor metabolic abnormalities that are associated with obesity, including high blood pressure, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and heart disease.

So give your credit cards a break. If you want to lose weight there is no need to buy the latest fitness gadget, video or membership. Just start eating right.

I’ve often wondered “where does the fat go?” If I’ve been successfully dieting or working out very hard and fat starts disappearing form my body I wonder where it goes.

I’ve always thought that sweat and other less pleasant excretions got fat physically out of my body. Turns out that’s mostly wrong. Turns out that most of the nasty fat hanging off your body disappears with your breath!

According to an article by Janet Fang this is what happens.

“Excess carbs and proteins are converted into chemical compounds called triglycerides (which consist of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen) and then stored in the lipid droplets of fat cells. To lose weight, you’re attempting to metabolize those triglycerides, and that means unlocking the carbon that’s stored in your fat cells.

Losing 10 kilograms of human fat requires the inhalation of 29 kilograms of oxygen, producing 28 kilograms of carbon dioxide and 11 kilograms of water. That’s the metabolic fate of fat.

Turns out, our lungs are the primary excretory organ for weight loss. The remaining 1.6 kilograms becomes water, which is excreted in urine, feces, sweat, breath, tears, and other bodily fluids.”

So should we all be deep breathing to expell more fat? No, that will only lead to htperventilation and you might fall over.You’ll have to stick with the old ways tp lose weight, good diet, proper exercise but now we know where it goes.

They have these in the frozen foods section at Safeway and they are just super microwaved. Also rich in amino acids.

7 grams of protein in 2 tablespoons

No you won’t get addle headed and paranoid if you eat this. Hemp is a close cousin to marijuana but it is not intoxicating. These will not only give you vegetable protein they’ll also help you fight heart disease because they are very high in Omega-3s.

I put them in my bullet blender, break them up and sprinkle on my morning cereal. Tastes good!

This article on Huffington Post describes “Cooking Classes In African Cuisine” and every recipe they cook is plant-based, either vegetarian or vegan.

Every culture has loads of delicious plant-based recipes. When I lived in the far east a few years ago I had no trouble at all staying away from meat.

Community-Led Cooking Classes In African Cuisine Are Helping People Lose Weight, Eat Healthier

When it comes to working toward a healthier lifestyle, the answers to the problems of obesity, diabetes and diet-related chronic illnesses that threaten our future might actually lie in our past.

That is the message of Oldways, a Boston-based food and nutrition education organization, and, thanks to a unique initiative called the African Heritage and Health Program, it is an idea that could go a long way toward addressing some of the serious health disparities facing black Americans.

The volunteer program is an extension of the African Heritage Diet Pyramid, which Oldways created in 2011 with historians and dietitians. The idea is straightforward: to not only teach students how to prepare healthy and flavorful food, but also to help them understand how such food connects to their African heritage.

“It gives people the tools they need, the techniques they can apply to different plant-based foods on the pyramid,” Sarah McMackin, the program’s manager at Oldways, told The Huffington Post. “The impetus is to try and really help people put this way of eating into practice today.”

The program is 100 percent plant-based — “because we know that is the part of the plate most people could use the most help with,” McMackin explained — and classes are offered free of charge thanks to a grant from the Walmart Foundation. The initiative began as a pilot program in 2013, and has since grown to the point where it has been offered at 100 different sites nationwide.

An African Heritage and Health Program class begins to take shape when a volunteer instructor signs up through the Oldways website and commits to teaching six weekly meetings, recruiting students and helping them track their progress. The organization provides the curriculum and can help instructors secure appropriate kitchen space. In some cases, Oldways has provided funding to reimburse the cost of groceries, but in others the instructors fundraise — or consider charging a small student fee — to cover that expense.

Instructors, according to McMackin, have included people from a range of backgrounds including dietitians, chefs and other community members who simply want to get themselves — as well as their community organization or faith group — to make better food choices.

In the first week of class outlined in the curriculum, students taste Jollof rice, a traditional West African dish, learn how to use herbs and spices to make spicy chickpeas and other dishes, and engage in an education segment about hidden sodium in processed foods. By the sixth week, students learn how to make braised cabbage, blackened okra and a mango and papaya fruit salad, and receive tips on how to make healthier choices when eating out.
